The 2018 hurricane season officially begins on June 1st, 2018. This coming year is predicted to be ‘slightly above average’ in terms of hurricanes. While meteorology is a science, it is not an exact science. Those that predict the weather do the best that they can but are unable to give a guaranteed prediction of what is to come.
Last year we had a number of strong hurricanes such as Harvey, Irma, and Maria. These three are within the top five of costliest hurricanes on record. Hurricane Harvey is estimated to have caused near $125 billion worth of damages. The only hurricane that caused more damage is Hurricane Katrina which hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in 2005. Due to the severity of the three hurricanes last year, all three names have been retired by the World Meteorologist Hurricane Committee.
