Education is one of the most pressing issues in New Orleans. HandsOn New Orleans has made a commitment to securing assistance for public schools through the Principal for a Day program. HandsOn builds meaningful partnerships between schools and community and business through the yearly Principal for a Day event.
In 2009, 58 business leaders visited 33 schools for half a day in order to highlight the daily achievements and struggles within schools. Visiting Principals for a Day (PFADs) sat in on teacher meetings, watched student band practices, observed classrooms and spoke with students about their own careers. Their experiences have been translated into thriving partnerships that benefit New Orleans public schools. As a result of the Principal for a Day program:
- Price Waterhouse Coopers donated $2,500 to Warren Easton High School to fund a tutoring program between high school students and elementary school students
- The FBI of New Orleans organized a career awareness event with speakers at James Singleton Charter School
- Wendy Waren of the Louisiana Restaurant Association organized a day of tree planting on the grounds of Laurel Elementary
- Numerous other dedicated PFADs have made personal contributions through mentoring students and in-kind donations to their partner schools
For the 2010 Principal for a Day event on Friday, November 12, we hope to engage even more schools and local leaders.
