Each year HandsOn New Orleans provides an array of special opportunities for community involvement with annual service projects and other events. Each year these projects build momentum; rallying more volunteers around a single day of service.

January - Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service: Unite, Serve, Remember
Join New Orleanians from all backgrounds and ages as we celebrate Dr. King's legacy by turning community concerns into citizen
action. The King Week of Service brings together people who
might not ordinarily meet, breaks down barriers that have
divided us in the past, and leads us to better understanding and
social action. The King Week of Service offers opportunities
for community members to explore Dr. King’s legacy and apply
them to today’s pressing concerns through workshops, film
screenings, youth summits, conversations, performances, and
service.
This year, the King Week of Service will be January 11-18, 2010. In partnership with community agencies across the city, HandsOn New Orleans will engage thousands of individuals in service projects ranging from book give-aways to canned food drives to school revitalization projects and everything in between.
HandsOn New Orleans began in March of 2006. To commemorate our anniversary, we invite New Orleanians to join together for a day of service.
In March 2008, we launched the first annual HandsOn New Orleans Day, which culminated in the revitalization and restoration of AP Tureaud Park. Over 50 volunteers participated in the restoration, including students from Xavier University, St. Augustine HIgh School, members of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, HandsOn's volunteer leaders, and neighborhood residents. In 2009, we hope to engage at least 100 volunteers in a celebration of service.
Global Youth Service Day is the largest annual celebration of youth volunteerism. In celebration of Global Youth Service Day, millions of young people in countries across the world will carry out thousands of community improvement projects to highlight the contributions and importance of youth volunteers.
Global Youth Service Day offers a way for local, national, and international organizations to:
-Educate the public, the media, and policy-makers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders around the world;
-Mobilize youth and adults to meet the needs of their communities through volunteerism; and
-Learn and share effective practices in youth service and civic engagement in the world today.
Save the date! The 22nd Annual
Global Youth Service Day will be held April 23-25, 2010. HandsOn New Orleans will rally and support youth as they volunteer to change New Orleans.
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita brought national attention to the long-standing problems of poverty, racism, bureaucracy, and corruption in New Orleans. By all accounts to date, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita created the nation's worst natural disaster. In the aftermath of the storm, the world responded with an outpouring of volunteerism and resources that continues to rebuild the Gulf Coast today. New Orleans and its people are resilient and determined. On the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans community comes together for summits, vigils, dialogue, ceremonies, and service.
