Within days of Hurricane Gustav, HandsOn New Orleans' volunteers and staff worked in collaboration with the National Guard in order to distribute bottled water, Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs), and ice to hundreds on Baton Rouge residents in need. Through the Virtual Volunteer Reception Center that HONO established, we have continued to connect volunteers with food distribution sites across the state of Louisiana.

In addition, HONO volunteers met the immediate food needs of Baton Rouge residents by volunteering at the East Baton Rouge Food Bank. Our volunteers helped to sort food items in the Food Bank warehouse, allowing other volunteers to create hundreds of extra packages of food stuffs to meet the great demand for these items in the wake of the hurricane.
